Medard Project. What is it?
- Medard Project is a full-scale solution of the recovery of an area after the brown coal mining in the district of Sokolov.
- The project brings in a design of transformation of a wasteland in an area attractive for tourist, cultural and similar kinds of activities.
- The project offers an economic revitalisation and appreciation of an area of the residual collieries of the Medard – Libík, Lítov – Boden and Gustav quarries within coverage unique so far.
- The project represents an example of a reclamation and revitalisation of landscape in the area of artificially made Medard Lake of some 500 hectares.
- In view of the territory, it is an area of 44 km2 situated in immediate vicinity of villages of Bukovany, Svatava, Citice and towns of Habartov and Sokolov.
- Undoubtedly, abandoned area and territory of the surrounding dumps offers a new chance for the region. ! Today, it has become sure the newly developed water surface area (the Medard Lake) and its immediate neighbourhood will offer a new potential of development.
- Project Essential Concept
- The area is formed by two parts different in conditions, situation, topography, the reclamation forms and process, from which a different approach to the solution arises.
- Principal subjects of the east part (area of Medard – Libík, the Čistecká dump, Gustav and Antonín) is recreation related to the Medard water area – water sports, sports centre, recreation accommodation facilities of various forms, development of conditions for bathing/swimming and berth, provision of links to the town of Sokolov.
- Subjects of the west part (area of Lítov – Boden) should become culture and arts linked to Chlum Sv. Maří (land art/earth art ), education, science, research, a golf course , recreation activities linked to the pond of Boden.
