Brief characteristics of the area Brown coal mining was discontinued in the area a short time ago. Now, significant changes are carried out, reclamation works in particular. The Region, mining companies (Sokolovská uhelná a.s. legal successor) and the affected municipalities endeavour to revitalise the area in an essential way. The principal phenomenon to be developed is the Medard lake of an area of some 500 hectares. The contiguous area of the lake-to- be offers convenient localisation of activities related to the area of water (port facilities, camping, restaurants etc.). The areas of adjacent dumps are suitable to situate there other leisure time activities but also to construct conference centres, servicing facilities or social services. In the western parts, there are conditions for developing a full university ground.

Description of the area The area is situated inside the ring formed by villages of Bukovany, Chlum Sv. Maří, Citice, Svatava and towns of Habartov and Sokolov

Evaluation of transport availability The eastern and south-eastern part of the area is situated near I/6 international road. Service of the north and west part is provided by so-called “parallel in the foothills of the Ore Mountains“ – II/181 road and also by road II/210. Connection abroad will be, except for crossing on R6 in the Bavaria in Germany provided primarily to Saxony by I/21 road (Vojtanov/Schönberg crossing ) and for regional and passenger car transport by II/210 (Sokolov – Kraslice/Klingenthal road), or by II/181 and II/212 (Habartov – Luby/Mark Neukirchen road ).
